Despite its relatively long body, the honey badger is noticeably thick-set and broad across the back. As a result, it can freely bend and twist within its skin, which is an impressive feature. The skin around the neck is 6 millimetres (0.24 in) thick, which serves as an adaptation for close-quarters combat with conspecifics.

The head of this creature is small and flat in shape, with a short muzzle. This, along with the small size of the eyes and ears, which are nothing more than ridges on the skin, is another likely adaptation for avoiding damage while fighting.

The honey badger has short and robust legs, as well as five toes on each foot. The feet, like the rest of the body, are armed with extremely strong claws that are relatively short on the back legs and extraordinarily long on the forelimbs. It is a plantigrade creature with heavily padded soles that is completely bare up to the wrists and neck. With the exception of the area below the base, the tail is short and covered in long hairs.

Honey badgers are the world's largest terrestrial mustelids, as well as the largest in Africa. Adults are 23–28 cm (9.1–11.0 in) tall at the shoulder and 55–77 cm (22–30 in) long, with the tail adding another 12–30 cm (4.7–11.8 in) to the overall length. Males are noticeably smaller than females. In Africa, males weigh an average of 9 to 16 kg (20 to 35 lb), while females weigh an average of 5 to 10 kg (11 to 22 lb). According to numerous studies, the average weight of adult honey badgers ranges from 6.4 to 12 kilogrammes (14 to 26 lb), with a median weight of around 9 kg (20 lb). According to this, it is the third largest terrestrial mustelid after the European and hog badgers, and the fourth largest overall among the remaining living terrestrial mustelids, which also includes the wolverine.

A wild female from Iraq weighed an average of 18 kg (40 lb), which is comparable to the average weight of males from the largest-bodied wolverine populations or male European badgers in late autumn, indicating that they can grow much larger than average weights when given favourable environmental conditions. An adult girl and two men in India, on the other hand, were quite small at the time of the study, weighing 6.4 kg (14 lb) and 8.4 kg (a median of 8.4 kg, respectively) (19 lb). Males have a skull length of 13.9–14.5 cm (5.5–5.7 in), whereas females have a skull length of 13 cm (5.5–5.7 in) (5.1 in).

This group contains two mammae. The honey badger has an eversible anal pouch, which is unusual among mustelids and is also shared by hyenas and mongooses, making it a distinct member of the family. According to reports, the fragrance of the pouch is "suffocating," and it may help to calm bees while they are raiding beehives.

In comparison to the European badger's skull, the marbled polecat's skull appears to be a larger version of the latter's skull. The adult skull is extremely well-built, whereas the child's skull shows little evidence of an independent bone structure. Dog braincases are larger than human braincases.
